It began at Reno Airport … [watch video] … in September 2017.

Travel Interruptions! How do you react? (Video: 3:01 minutes)

After this delay in Reno, I did miss my flight to Orlando. When I arrived in San Francisco, I was already re-booked for a flight leaving late-afternoon to Houston Airport with a connection the following morning at 7:30 AM to Orlando. I arrived in Houston around 11:00 PM and learned that everything was shutting down. I found the last vendor open and bought water and a couple of granola bars.  Then I sat myself in front of the TSA check-in station.

Around 1 AM in the morning, everyone left … except for the occasional night-shift person walking by. I was alone. No nearby hotels had rooms available so I sat in the airport. I nodded off for a few minutes at a time, but stayed awake all night.

Was it my fault? Yup, it was.

I’ve lived in the Tahoe region now for over 20 years. I know that fog/weather in San Francisco often results in delays from Reno unless I take the 0-dark 5:30/6:00 AM flight out. This time, because my connecting flight out of San Francisco wasn’t until 1 PM, I chose to take the 10 AM flight from Reno. Bad call – but I should have known.

My lesson from that day was to recognize that my choices are what impact my life the most. If I truly commit to the result I want, I do what it takes, not what is convenient. This time, I opted for convenience and paid the price. My girlfriend who was also going to the event from Tahoe, flew the red-eye the night before and arrived in Orlando the morning before the event. Lounging all day in Orlando was the better choice.
